May 31 – Day 5 – Narvik, Norway

Another beautiful day, 62 degrees and sunny here above the Arctic Circle.

Port at Narvik

This morning started with a tour of Narvik’s Industrial Past and Present. Our guide was a German transplant with a fairly difficult accent to understand 😜 Iron ore is a big part of life here – they store ore in mountain tunnels so it is accessible for transport, even if the trains are unable to run because of snow.

The church we visited graced us with lovely accapella songs prior to hearing the history of the church – if you are interested in this, I’ve included a link under the picture above.

This afternoon we will learn about the Sami people of the region and witness an ancient Sami shaman ceremony.

Take aways from the Sami Ceremony:

Words for War and hate do not exist in Sami language

Alcohol is referred to as “Devil’s Pee”

“Respect nature, give back to nature, share what you have with your neighbors “

The movie Frozen and Frozen II had Kristof, who was Sami 😉

We leave port at 7:30 p.m. and start all over again tomorrow!
